April 6 / Ever-growing honesty

"On a practical level, changes arise because what works in one phase of recovery may not work in another."
Main Text, p. 121

When we came to Narcotics Anonymous most of us were not involved in legal activities. And neither did we suddenly decide to become honest and creative members of this society. But we soon discovered that many of the things we did in use without any qualms, when we did them in recovery we didn't feel good.

As we progress in recovery, we begin to be honest about issues that may not have even bothered us before. We return the extra change that a cashier might have accidentally given us, or we take responsibility when we crash a parked car. When we begin to be honest in these small things, we can more easily do so in the most important ones.

Most of us came into the program with limited ability to be honest. But as we work the Twelve Steps, our lives begin to change. We no longer feel comfortable winning at the expense of others and feel good about the honesty we have gained.

Just for today

I will examine how honest I am in my life and how I feel about it.
