July 10 / Positive attitude

"I carried this focus of negativity everywhere I went."
Basic Text, p. 137

The hallmark of active addiction is a negative attitude toward everything. Whatever happened in our lives, something or someone was to blame. It had become second nature for us to blame others for our imperfections. In recovery one of the first things we try to revise is our attitude towards life. We find that life flows more easily when we let go of our negative way of thinking and adopt some positive principles.

In use, wherever we went we carried a negativity, but very often we also carry it in the rooms of Narcotics Anonymous. How does our attitude towards life change? We start by changing our actions. It's not easy, but it can be done.

For starters, we observe the way we speak. Before we open our mouths, we ask ourselves a few simple questions: Is what I'm going to say about the problem or the solution? What I have to say, am I able to express it politely? Do I have to talk about something specific, or is what I'm going to say general and vague and doesn't address anyone, so I might as well not say it? Do I only speak because I like to be heard? After all, do the "wisdoms" I say have any purpose?

Our attitude is expressed through our actions. Often it's not what we say, but how we say it. As we learn to value the way we speak, we notice that our attitude towards life becomes more positive.

Just for today

I want to free myself from negativity. Today I will keep a positive attitude in my words and actions.
