July 27 / We are indeed recovering

“When we came to NA, we met a group of people whose specialty was that they had suffered like us and found recovery. By listening to others share their experience openly, we discover our own hope. Since the program worked for them, it can work for us."
Main Text, p. 11

Newcomers are flustered and confused when they make their first gathering. Inside the room, people come and go. Some tidy up the cafeteria and the forms. The meeting begins after each member is seated in a chair. The newcomer, after casting a questioning glance at this seemingly incongruous group of people, wonders, “Why should I trust these people with my life? After all, they are also drug addicts like me."
It is true that, when we first came here, few of us looked like we would make any progress in recovery. Newcomers quickly understand that what counts is the way we live today. Our gatherings are full of drug addicts whose lives have been completely changed. Against all odds, we are recovering. Newcomers can identify with the lives we once led, and they draw hope from seeing our lives now. Today, we all have a chance to recover.
It is a fact that we can trust our lives to our Higher Power and Narcotics Anonymous without hesitation. As long as we work the program, the result is certain: freedom from active addiction and a better way of life.

Just for today

The recovery I found in Narcotics Anonymous is very real. If I rely on her, I know I will mature.
