October 15 / Choices

"We didn't choose to become drug addicts."
Main Text, p. 4

When we were growing up, we all had dreams. When we were children, we all heard from a relative or neighbor the question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Even if some of us hadn't thought about what exactly we wanted to achieve, most of us dreamed of a job, a family and a life with dignity and respect. No one asked us if we want to be drug addicts when we grow up.

We didn't choose to become drug addicts and we don't have a choice to stop being drug addicts. We have the disease of addiction. We are not to blame for this disease, but we are responsible for our recovery. Knowing that we have an illness and that there is a way to recover, we can now stop blaming the circumstances or ourselves and move on to the solution. We did not choose addiction but we can choose recovery.

Just for today

I choose recovery.
