January 17 / Forgiveness

"The more we realize our need to be forgiven, the more we can forgive. If nothing else, we know that we no longer make other people's lives difficult lightly."
Basic Text, p. 46

When we were in active addiction, we usually treated others badly, sometimes intentionally trying to make their lives miserable. In recovery we may still tend to criticize others for what they do because we think we know how they should behave. But in the course of recovery, we often find that in order to accept ourselves, we also need to accept those around us.

It is certainly not easy to have someone who is insanity by our side. But if we can take a step back, we have a chance to move to the solution. And if we feel that the actions of others have an impact on us, we have the choice to apply the principle of forgiveness.

Just for today

I will do my best to forgive, instead of seeking forgiveness from others. I will make sure to choose actions that help me love myself.
