October 17 / The absolute truth

"We are reexamining everything we know and especially our perception of truth."
Basic Text, pp. 108-109

Many of us thought we could identify the ultimate truth. We believed that the truth was one and only, non-negotiable and fixed, which we could easily perceive without looking too hard. But in reality, we were unable to see the truth, even if it was right in front of us. Our illness affected everything in our lives, especially our perception of truth. In essence, what we "knew" to be true nearly killed us. Before we could begin to recognize the truth, it was necessary instead of addiction to have on our side a Higher Power from which all that is positive and true flows.

The perception of truth changes as our belief in a Higher Power grows. By working the Steps, our whole lives have begun to be changed by the healing power of the principles of recovery. For this change to be possible, we had to surrender our attachment to a fixed and rigid truth.

The truth becomes simpler and clearer each time we come into contact with it, and just as the Steps work in our lives every day, if we naturally allow it, our perception of the truth can change every day as we mature.

Just for today

I will open my eyes and my heart to the changes the Steps bring to my life. By keeping an open mind, I can figure out what the truth is in my life today.
